The decision to build the lift was taken in the 1880s to enable barges to overcome the drop of more than 13 metres on the Neuffossé Canal. The operation, controlled from the cabin at the top of the central tower, required six men and took 20 minutes. The Fontinettes lift operated until 1967. A unique engineering structure in France, it was listed as a historic monument in 2014.

The restoration of the structure now allows visitors to explore the site on a guided tour. Today, you can visit the repair workshop, stroll along the towpath and discover the way of life of the boatmen aboard a Freycinet barge.

For both individuals and groups, the audio-guided tour of the interpretation centre can be complemented by a guided tour of the outdoor area around the Fontinettes Boat Lift.

Educational workshops (during school holidays) are also available.
